The chance to climb off bottom is a personal motivation for St George Illawarra halfback Kyle Flanagan after the Dragons kept their hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon alive.
After beating embattled premiers Brisbane in round 13, the Red V claimed just their second win of the season by defeating Wests Tigers 24-10 at Kogarah on Saturday.
Both victories have come under Dean Young, who has been the interim coach since the exit of Flanagan's father Shane in April.
The Dragons have shown encouraging signs under Young's guidance through the past month by pushing Newcastle and Canberra close on the road before sinking the Tigers.
The Red V have never claimed a wooden spoon as a joint venture but with a favourable draw after this week's bye, the Dragons have a chance to climb off bottom.
"You always want to win going into a bye and get six days off to spend some time with the family," Flanagan told AAP.
"For me personally and I'm not too sure as a team, but for me personally, that (avoiding the wooden spoon) is something of a goal.
"I think we can address that as a team, getting off the bottom of the ladder and looking at the last eight games and what we can do to make our fans and the club proud.
"Hopefully we can string a few good performances together at the back end of the season and who knows where we end up."
The Dragons have five home games to end the year and play four sides currently outside of the top eight to end the season.
Of those sides on the bottom half of the ladder, the Gold Coast (4-11), appear the likeliest side Saints could leapfrog to climb off 17th spot.
"We've got quite a tight group of players who are enjoying coming to training every day," Flanagan said.
"We've been faced with a lot of challenges in the first part of the season but our captains have brought everyone together, and we just keep turning up for our teammates."
