Dragons' Den viewers gobsmacked by investment after 'dog's dinner of a pitch'

The Dragons were back in the den and ready to splash the cash on a budding entrepreneur with a profitable idea on Thursday evening.

Waiting to hear the business proposals were Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden, Tej Lalvani, Sara Davies and Touker Suleyman, who were ready to open the cheque book and bag themselves an investment.

Walking in with her pet pooch was Glasgow-based natural pet foods entrepreneur Dom Hogan.

Lockdown had seen a boom in sales for her doggy treats and Dom was looking to attract a Dragon with 10 per cent of the business for £50,000.

It didn't look like it would be a promising start as Dom admitted before walking out to the Dragons: "I wasn't planning on starting a business and I still don't really know what I am doing but it is going from strength to strength and a bit crazy."

She wanted to get her nutritional pet treats to a wider market but continually admitted to the investors that she was "not a businesswoman" and that she needed a "mentor" to point her in the right direction.

This proved to be a turn-off for most of the Dragons and the self-proclaimed "crazy dog lady" looked like she was about to leave empty-handed.

However, that all changed when Touker Suleyman - the only remaining Dragon in the deal - had an offer for Dom to consider.

"It was very brave to go straight into the manufacturing side but in some respects if you have a growing business, it is an asset," he said to Dom.

Suleyman decided that he would make an offer but it came at a price - the whole £50,000 but for a 35 per cent stake in the business.

Dom held her nerve and asked for him to lower his stake to 20 per cent and eventually negotiated that Suleyman lowered his percentage to 20 per cent after 18 months.

However, Dragons' Den viewers were gobsmacked that she even managed to get a deal in the first place after making somewhat of a hash of presenting her ideas.

One viewer tweeted: "She made a right dogs dinner of that pitch... #dragonsden "

Another exclaimed: "How the feck did she pull that one off #dragonsden "

A third added: "Well that was a total surprise #dragonsden"

Meanwhile, the official Dragons' Den Twitter account had some celebratory words for Dom: "Congratulations to Opie’s Emporium for negotiating a ‘pawsome’ deal with @toukersuleyman "
