Dragman to the rescue! Steven Appleby on his trans superhero

ENCORE! © FRANCE 24

His funny, delicate and dark illustrations are familiar to readers of British newspapers and adored for their philosophical take on daily life. When Steven Appleby introduced a new character to his comic strips, "Dragman", few of his readers were aware that the author and illustrator also wore a wig and women's clothes.

That superhero is now the protagonist of Appleby's graphic novel, "Dragman", which won the special jury prize at the Angoulême comics festival in France this year.

He joins us to talk about the transformative power of a misplaced stocking and the fear and shame that haunted him as a young person discovering his own identity.

We discuss the heated debate sparked by pronouns, as trans rights and questions surrounding gender remain in the spotlight in the arts and beyond.
