Drag Idol Newcastle crowns a new champion and her name is absolutely brilliant

After six weeks of fierce competition, Drag Idol Newcastle came to an end on Sunday night and the annual contest now has a new champion.

With a record number of contestants, this year has been the biggest in the show's 12 year history and three talented queens battled it out in the final in front of a capacity crowd at Boulevard.

Pebble Dash, Chanel-Marie and Choriza May each performed two numbers to impress the audience and a judging panel that featured TV stars Harrie Thorpe, of Brittas Empire and Absolutely Fabulous fame, and David O'Reilly from Benidorm.

The big finale brought an eclectic mix of routines with everything from Stephen King film Misery to THAT "it was f****** one of yas," viral video referenced as each finalist made their bid for the 2019 title.

In the end a very well deserved victory went to Choriza, and in keeping with her absolutely genius name, kept things very topical with a Brexit themed number to And I'm Telling You from Dreamgirls, as well as wowing with a fiery masterpiece which showcased her Spanish roots and featured her cousin who'd flown over specially for the final.

Every time Choriza's name was mentioned the crowd went wild so it was no surprise her winning moment received a rapturous reception in the room.

Giving her winner's speech, Choriza thanked the audience, the judges, her fellow Drag Idol contestants and mentor Penni T.

You'll get your first chance to see her perform as Drag Idol 2019 champion when she returns to the Boulevard stage to take part in Newcastle Pride fundraiser Be Scene. Tickets for the event are now on sale from the Northern Pride website.

And she will also perform on the main stage at Pride in July.
