Draft Wire gives Texans a C for their 2019 NFL draft class

The Houston Texans had an average draft, so says Luke Easterling of the Draft Wire.

The managing editor and draft guru gave the first real draft for general manger Brian Gaine a C grade.

It makes sense because the Texans went against the grain with some of their picks. With Cody Ford and Greg Little available, players who played against Power 5 talent, Houston went with Tytus Howard from Alabama State with the 23rd overall pick in Round 1. Then, with their 86th overall pick in Round 3, the Texans took tight end Kahale Warring, claiming he was the best player on their board at that spot.

“Our whole goal for the draft was to honor the process,” Gaine told the media at the conclusion of the draft on Saturday. “You’ve heard me say that before. We had a very good balance of best available mixed with the opportunity to meet team needs, but equally just impressed with the scouts’ effort, the coaching staff’s effort — the vetting process in terms of the intangible profile, the character profile, guys who love football, who embraced the process of getting ready to play on Sundays.

“I feel like with every at-bat we had, we got good football players, but guys that will fit our culture and fit our program as well.”

Ultimately, what the players do on Sundays and how they fit in with the veterans will determine the success of the draft, which can’t be measured for a couple of seasons. Nonetheless, there will be questions as to the efficacy of some of the Texans’ picks when considering that there were other more proven options available.
