Dr Tony Holohan set to resume role as Chief Medical Officer

Dr Tony Holohan will return to his role as Chief Medical Officer next week.

Ireland's top doctor temporarily stood down in July, when he tragically revealed his wife had entered palliative care after an ongoing cancer battle.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly confirmed this morning that the Chief Medical Officer will be back at the helm on Monday.

Mr Donnelly also thanked Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, for filling in for the past few months and said he looks forward to working with both of them from now on - saying “the more expertise, the better.”

Mr Donnelly was speaking to reporters at the Department of Health this afternoon.

He said: “Of course I welcome back Dr Tony Holohan.

“He did an extraordinary job and became a national hero when Covid arrived, before Covid arrived as well.

“I think Dr Glynn has done incredibly well in stepping into that role and I very much look forward to working with Dr Glynn and Dr Holohan.

“Quite frankly, the more expertise, the more public health doctors, the more experience we have here helping the country helping the country through this winter, this Covid winter, the better.”

Speaking at the time of standing down, Dr Holohan said: "My wife, Emer, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer in2012. She has had a number of difficult years with her disease and was admitted for palliative care last Saturday.

"I now want to give my energy, attention and all of my attention to our two teenage children, Clodagh and Ronan.

"I have spoken with the Taoiseach, Minister for Health and other colleagues about this, and they have kindly offered their support and best wishes to both of us."
