Dr Tony Holohan says 'it's not going to be a normal Halloween' as cases spiral

Dr Tony Holohan has said that we "can't have a normal Halloween" as Covid-19 cases continue to spiral.

The Chief Medical Officer was speaking at a press briefing at the Department of Health on Monday evening, where a staggering 825 new cases were reported, along with one further death.

And as the national incidence rate continues to spiral, now at 167.8 per 100,000 population, Halloween is one event that will not go ahead as normal.

Dr Holohan said: "As the year goes on, different social events, sporting events or whatever it may be, become prominent in our consideration and we have to give specific consideration to them and that's one of the things we'll be looking at a little bit more closely.

"Our general advice, and you can absolutely anticipate this, is going to be founded on the fact that we're trying to have people stay away.

"So it's not going to be a normal Halloween. It can't be. We can't have children and families moving from house to house in the way that normally happens at Halloween."

The total number of Covid-19 cases in Ireland since the start of the pandemic is now 43,531. Two cases were denotified today and that figure is correct as of publication.
