Dr Tony Holohan's heartbreaking message as Ireland hits unwanted milestone

The number of people to lose their lives to Covid-19 in Ireland has now surged past 2,000.

The nation hit the unwanted landmark after 12 more deaths were confirmed on Wednesday evening.

This brought the official death toll to 2,006, while there have been at least 69,058 infections in the Republic.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “Today we sadly report over 2,000 deaths associated with COVID-19 to date in this country.

"This pandemic has impacted, directly and indirectly, on families and communities all across Ireland.

“It is important that we continue to work together if we are to suppress this virus and protect as many people as possible.

"For the next two weeks, work from home, stay at home and follow public health advice.”

Of those included in the latest 379 infections, 174 were men and 203 were women.

The median age was 36, while 64% of new cases were recorded in people under the age of 45.

As of 2pm, 282 patients are in hospital battling the virus, while 33 are fighting for their lives in intensive care.

There were 22 admissions to hospitals nationwide in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Dublin yet again recorded the highest number of new cases at 116, followed by Donegal which had 38.

Meath saw 30 new infections, while Cork had 27 and Limerick and Louth both had 22.

The remaining 124 cases were spread out across all other counties.
