Dr Tony Holohan issues message of hope as Ireland sees huge case drop

The Chief Medical Officer issued a message of hope as Ireland saw a drop of 356 new virus infections in just 24 hours.

While the country tragically recorded five further deaths, the number of cases notified fell to 416 - down from 772 on Friday.

A staggering 19 counties saw their case figures fall, with Monaghan and Laois not diagnosing any further patients.

Announcing the figures on Saturday, Dr Tony Holohan explained how while we still have a long way to go, the nation is "on the right track".

He said: “We are making progress in suppressing the current rise of COVID-19.

"Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence.

"Nationally, our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.0.

“We are working collectively to achieve suppression, but it is too early to ease our efforts.

"The incidence is decreasing in young adults but it continues to rise in those aged over 75.

"We have more to do but we are on the right track.”

Dublin again saw the most number of new infections, albeit at just 87, down from 228 on Friday.

Cork recorded 62 new cases, while there were 41 in Mayo and 37 in Galway.

The remaining 189 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

Of today's figures, 186 are men and 230 are women, while 64% are under the age of 45.

The median age of those diagnosed is 34.
