Dr Tony Holohan awarded honorary fellowship of Royal College for Surgeons for work during pandemic

Dr Tony Holohan has been awarded an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in recognition of his work during the pandemic.

Dr Holohan has been the Chief Medical Officer for 13 years and became a familiar face at NPHET meetings last year when facemasks, Covid-19 tests and social distancing first entered our everyday conversation.

After graduating from UCD, he trained in General Practice. He went on to study a Masters in Public Health, getting the top grades in his class.

CEO of RCSI, Professor Cathal Kelly applauded Dr Holohan’s decisive action during the first wave of the virus.

He said: “Under Dr Holohan’s sterwardship, early and decisive action was taken, putting Ireland in a stronger position to manage the first wave of the virus than our neighbours to the east and west.”

RCSI President, Professor O’Connell praised Dr Holohan for his transparency and inspiring trust among the Irish people.

“Putting public health first, Dr Holohan has been transparent from the start, providing clear information which inspired trust and cohesion among a great majority of the Irish people.”

Yesterday, HSE Chief Paul Reid announced that over three million vaccines have now been administered in Ireland as the country moves towards better days.
