Trump’s Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Dr. Mehmet Oz, wants elderly boomers to work till they’re 65 because the economy surely needs their bodies more than they and their families do. Right?
Despite having spent the last four decades as a doctor, it appears that Dr. Oz has forgotten all his vows of compassion and care. Speaking live from Washington on Oct. 7, Oz proposed that all workers born in 1964, who are supposed to retire this year, should instead work three more years till they’re 65 years old. The reason? “It’s worth more than a trillion dollars to the U.S. economy.” But even more bizarrely, he purported that these elderly boomers “would want to do it anyway” if they felt vibrant, vigorous, alive, and fit.”
In essence, Oz believes that every regular worker in America is practically living for the sake of working and not to do anything for themselves, while those at the top spend half their lives on vacations. The audacity is nothing but vicious at a time when Americans are already fighting against the inhumane cuts from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act by the Trump administration.
While people are already desperately trying to work till they’re 62 despite disabilities and health concerns, just so they can receive social security income, Oz’s statement not only shows his blindness to the actual problems of American citizens, but also his incompetence at his job. He was criticized cruelly on X, where one thrashed him saying, “If we could repeal Trump’s tax breaks for the top 1%, that’s worth more than a trillion dollars.”
Another commented, “Maybe Oz would feel differently if he did manual labor for a living,” while one pointed out the sad fact that most workers already don’t retire before 65 simply to be able to get Medicaid. The broader opinion was simple: When billionaires dodge taxes and corporations hoard wealth, it’s insulting to tell a 61-year-old warehouse worker that their exploitation is the key to saving the economy.
