Six-time Grammy Award-winning singer Dr John has died following a heart attack aged 77.
The New Orleans based artist had a 'voodoo-inspired' stage persona that saw him take in music genres from blues, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll.
Born Malcolm John Rebennack on November 20, 1941, he started his musical journey as a session musician before breaking through in the sixties.
Rebennack recorded more than 20 albums as Dr John and 1973, hit the top 10 with the single Right Place, Wrong Time.
His live shows were originally lively, theatrical performances that took in Mardi Gras costumes and voodoo style ceremonies.
Dr John was the winner of six Grammy Awards and in 2011, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend.
A family statement was released on social media, revealing the passing of the singer.
It read: "Towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack.
"The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time.
"Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course."
His birthday was proclaimed Dr John Day in New Orleans, due to his "rise to international recognition for his musical funkitude in performing, writing and producing."
Debbie Harry, the lead singer of new wave band Blondie, and former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr are among those to pay tribute.
Harry shared a picture of herself with Dr John and wrote: "RIP Mac Rebennack, Dr John."
Starr also tweeted a picture, along with the message: "God bless Dr. John peace and love to all his family I love the doctor peace and love."
