Dr Hillary's six tips for sleeping in hot weather

As the United Kingdom basks in a record breaking heatwave, sleeping can prove to be a problem for many at night.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Dr Hillary was on hand with Lorraine Kelly, revealing his top five tips everyone can try to help cool bedrooms so you can sleep easier.

From using a fan to wetting the bed sheets with water, Dr Hillary provided some rather unusual but clever ways to keep cool.

You can see his tips in the video above.

Tip One: Just use the duvet cover

"The most comfortable way of sleeping is the air in your bedroom is cool, and you use your bedding to warm you up.", Dr Hillary told Lorraine.

"Your body does the rest to adjust the temperature under the duvet."

"Shed the duvet and just use the cover of the duvet or a bed sheet, that's all."

Tip Two: Cold water bottles

"So, instead of a hot water bottle, you put it in the fridge, you fill it with some cold water, or some ice.

"It doesn't even have to be the rubber water bottle, it can be any bottle you've put in the fridge or in the freezer.", he told a rather surprised Lorraine.

Tip Three: Pillowcase in the freezer

Lorraine was left stunned by this trick Dr Hillary recommended: "You can also put your pillowcase in the freezer and take it out, so you've got a nice, cool thing to put your head on."

Lorraine added: "I'd never thought about that!"

Tip Four: Water on the sheet

Dr Hillary left Lorraine questioning his next tip on wetting sheets with water before jumping into bed:

"Some water, on the sheet, as well, because when the water evaporates, it causes a cooling effect." he told Lorraine who responded with, "Be careful with that, you don't want dampness."

Dr Hillary made the point it would quickly dry with the heat.

Tip Five: Having a cool shower before bed

A more commonly known tip was the cooling your body temperature before jumping into bed will help you fall asleep.

Tip Six: Fans and ice packs

"Obviously, a fan, you can have a bedside fan, like you have on an office desk." he added.

"Some people have an electric fan and they dangle an ice pack in front of it."

Lorraine was stunned by the idea as Dr Hillary went on to reveal how it works:

"So, it's not just recirculating the same temperature air and giving you a draft, it's giving you some cooler air as the it flows over the ice pack."

Good Morning Britain is on ITV from 8am every weekday morning.
