Dr Hilary warns of second coronavirus peak over social distancing suggestion for workers

Dr Hilary Jones has blasted "ridiculous" social distancing suggestions for workers and has warned of a "second wave" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The TV doctor, 66, appeared on Good Morning Britain today as he discussed concerns over the safety of workplaces.

Employers have been urged to stagger shift times, maximise home working and stop hot desking.

Asked by host Ben Shephard today about whether he agreed that the two-meter gap was "a bit arbitrary" and that there is "no real science" that it's what we need.

However Dr Hilary strongly responded: "I can't agree with that.

"Listen, we've been telling people to socially distance for six weeks, lockdown has worked quite well.

"We're not out of the woods yet and the thought of reducing our two meters distance apart for 15 minutes to sitting next to someone for eight hours a day, just one meter apart, seems a ridiculous step to make right now when we've done so well for the past six weeks.

"I think we will still need to maintain social distancing and if people need to go to work they need to be safe, I agree.

"I think we will need to stagger work times and shifts, we will need to keep people quite separate.

"We will need to make sure that they have thorough washing of keyboards and whatever they use in the factory, hand sanitiser in plentiful supply and never forget how important hand washing is on a frequent basis.

"We need to do all that otherwise we're going to get a second peak."
