Dr Hilary stuns Piers Morgan with 'stark' coronavirus survival rate in hospitals

Dr Hilary Jones left Piers Morgan stunned after delivering a "stark" coronavirus survival rate in hospitals.

Piers pointed out on Good Morning Britain: "It's quite important to talk about the death toll a lot - and rightly because people have been losing their lives in large numbers.

"What is the survival rate? People are saying we don't see many people coming out of hospital. What is the reality, in hospitals for example?"

Piers Morgan asked Dr Hilary about the survival rate in hospitals (ITV)
Dr Hilary confirmed that only 50% of those admitted to hospital with coronavirus have left after recovering (ITV)

Dr Hilary replied: "Okay, this will shock some people but currently of those most severely affected by coronavirus and who are admitted to hospital, half of them will recover and discharged but 30% will lose their lives and the other 20% are still in hospital.

"So that's stark and those figures have been compared to the mortality rate of Ebola, one of the most feared infections in the world in the last few years.

However Dr Hilary reiterated, however, that many people would be asymptomatic after contracting covid-19 (ITV)

"That's why we have to take this so very seriously."

Susanna Reid interjected to "get some extra perspective" on the figures.

She said: "What percentage of people who get covid end up in hospital? Because when we talk about survival rates, as you say, that's a grim, utterly tragic figure.

"But as a whole, among the general population, covid will be something you may not even know you had and most people, presumably, do recover."

Dr Hilary agreed and said that it was "very important to reiterate" that fact.
