Dr Hilary says two doses of Covid vaccine offer same protection as prior infection

Dr Hilary Jones told Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard the "good news", which is that two Covid jabs give you the same level of protection against Covid as having survived the virus itself.

Dr Hilary said: "There is a bit of good news to report, that is that early studies suggest that people who have had both doses of either vaccine, they have the same level of protection as if they'd had the infection.

"As someone who has survived and thrown off the infection, so really good news.

"I think it's really important to report on the optimistic and supportive news rather than just the scaremongering stories."

Susanna added: "And 50% of all adults in the UK should have received a Covid jab by the end of the week."

Ben Shephard questioned why European countries have temporarily halter the roll out of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine over fears it causes blood clots.

Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, Iceland, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands have all temporarily suspended their use of the AstraZeneca jab.

The countries decided to do so over concerns of possible side effects.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there was no evidence of a link between the jab and an increased risk of blood clots.

Ben asked: "So, where is it coming from Hilary? Lots of us are sitting at home and wondering, is this just the EU having a beef with the UK, playing politics, and finding a way of digging out the UK because it's our vaccine?"

"Well if it is, it's extremely foolish," replied Dr Hilary. "With any fairly novel medicine or device or vaccine, we have a stringent reporting scheme where anything anyone experiences should be reported just to see there are no consistent side effects."

He said: "For the number of people who have reported blood clots after being vaccinated, we are talking about 30 for the AstraZeneca vaccine and 38 for the Pfizer."
