Dr Hilary reveals which age group is behind the big rise in coronavirus cases - and why

Dr Hilary Jones has warned that large numbers of young adults aged between 20 and 29 are testing positive for coronavirus.

The latest figure for coronavirus cases in the UK revealed 2,988 people tested positive over the last 24-hours, the biggest recorded figure in a daily period since May 22.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on ITV, Dr Hilary revealed while the number of positive cases has skyrocketed over the last 24 hours, the number of deaths are still low on a daily average.

But he then went on to highlight one of the reasons why there has been a spike in positive cases, and that's because a large number of people, from teenagers to those in their 40s are transmitting it, without even knowing it.

He then went on to reveal the age group which are the biggest transmitters of the virus are those aged between 20 and 29:

"What we do know is that it's mainly younger people who are testing positive, particularly 15-year-olds to 44-year-olds.

"Of those, probably 20-29 are the majority of them (testing positive). So, young, working adults are the ones that are transmitting the virus to one and other."

Dr Hilary then added it's because of the ability of younger people to better deal with the virus, sometimes not experiencing any symptoms at all, which is leading to the recirculation of the virus:

"They're not becoming ill. We know that they have a better ability to cope with the virus, by enlarge, they're not so badly affected as the older group and those with pre-existing conditions.

"That's good - but there's the problem that if they're transmitting the virus, they could bring it home and more vulnerable people could be infected."

Lorraine returns at 9am on ITV every weekday morning.
