Dr Hilary Jones warns public to remain cautious despite 'milestone' day in coronavirus herd immunity

Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary Jones has urged people to remain cautious despite reports of a UK coronavirus immunity milestone being reaced.

It has been reported that almost three quarters of the population are now thought to be immune from Covid-19 in one way or another.

Scientists have said that within days, the UK is racing towards a "milestone" with regards to managing herd immunity against Covid-19.

This is due to people taking up the vaccine or because they have previously been infected with the virus.

Speaking on this morning’s GMB, Dr Hilary had a reminder for the UK public that despite the “terrific” update regarding immunity numbers and the coronavirus vaccine rollout, life can't go back to normal just yet.

It comes as Monday marks the day many venues such as gyms, shops and beer gardens are allowed to open up, though people must follow the current social distancing guidelines.

As restrictions begin to lift, Dr Hilary explained why people should not get ahead of themselves and should remain "cautious".

On the milestone, GMB host Susanna Reid said: “Dr Hilary, quite a significant moment today. I know the Prime Minister was going by the data not the date, but he has good news today in the sense that we’ve reached (the point where) almost three quarters of our population is now immune, in some way, shape or form.

"Either because they’ve previously been infected or because of the vaccination."

In response, Dr Hilary said: “it's a terrific week to talk about this. We’ve done so well with the vaccination rollout, so many NHS workers and volunteers have been involved in this.

"It's really remarkable, we're well ahead of Europe and on a par with the US, it's really good.

"But we must remember that immunity is not 100%, that there are new variants circulating and we still have to be pretty cautious.

"It is a wonderful thing that we have achieved, it really is and herd immunity is a strange thing.”

Hilary went into detail on the process of herd immunity adding: “This modelling of herd immunity that means that we are protecting people who cannot have vaccinations for whatever reason.

“Those people who are immunosuppressed or immunocompromised are protected when the herd is largely immune, either through natural disease or vaccination.

"However, it's a little bit more complex than that as with herd immunity, some infections are more contagious than others."

"So it does vary and it depends on the R rate and depends on various other factors, and of course in some remoter parts of the country, very little infection so very little immunity whereas in other places where you've had high rates of infection, high degrees of herd immunity."
