Dr Hilary Jones sends warning on GMB about booking summer holidays

Dr Hilary Jones has urged people wanting to book a summer holiday to be "realistic."

On Wednesday, Boris Johnson and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps both warned that it was still too soon to start booking holidays for this summer.

The Prime Minister told the Downing Street press conference it is "too early for people to be certain about what we will be able to do this summer".

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Dr Hilary warned against travelling abroad in the summer but offered some hope for UK staycations.

However, he told Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway that we have to be 'realistic' as we don't know what the R-rate will be in the summer.

Dr Hilary said: "It's far too early to think about travelling abroad internationally to the sun and the beach because we have 13,000 new cases.

"It may well be that we have the R-rate down sufficiently by the summer to go and have a staycation.

When should lockdown be lifted?

"I think it's good to have hope and expectation and optimism as long as you can book and defer.

"We don't know what the R-rate is going to be like in the summer. We don't know whether the Bristol variant is going to be more prevalent."

He added: "If you can book I don't think there is anything wrong with that provided in the back of your mind it might be deferred. But just be realistic, it might not happen just yet."
