Dr Hilary Jones says Christmas rules are 'recipe for disaster' as he reveals personal sacrifice

Dr Hilary Jones has warned that Christmas could be a "recipe for disaster" after the Government announced a relaxation of the rules.

Restrictions are due to be relaxed across the UK between December 23 and 27 to allow families to spend time together in “Christmas bubbles”.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, Dr Hilary warned that the virus is still prevalent and poses a threat to people's health.

The temporary rules mean that up to three households can meet and mix for the five day period over Christmas.

Dr Hilary said: "We've always said that this should be a different Christmas to the one's that we're used to.

"We've only got to look at the prevalence of the virus. The virus is still just as transmissible as it has always been.

"We're seeing ITU units in many hospitals in England right now nearly full with Covid patients, so we're back to where we were before when things were really bad.

"The R rate is rising, and if people are flocking together as three households, that could be 24 people easily.

"For up to five days and staying over and hugging, this is a recipe for disaster.

"I think our viewers know that. The vast majority are saying 'we've got to rein this in, we've got to be really careful.'"

Dr Hilary then revealed his own personal sacrifice over the festive period, adding: "I've got five kids, so I can't have two of them and not the other three.

"So it's going to be none of them this Christmas."

Lorraine continues weekdays on ITV at 9am.
