Dr Hilary Jones issues warning to anyone considering getting on a plane amid second peak fears

Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary Jones has warned Brits that getting on an aeroplane could spark a second peak of coronavirus.

The health expert was asked by Piers Morgan whether going on a plane was a 'sensible thing to do' at the moment.

He said: "Of course not.

"Air travel is how this pandemic began in the first place, that's how it spread from China to Italy to Germany to Iran, through air travel particularly."

After Susanna pointed out that almost all of the countries reopening via 'air bridges' have less cases than the UK, he explained that there was a greater risk to other countries than the UK.

He added: "They want to for the tourism business, it is an economic decision.

"A lot of people are saying 'we're not going to do that', a lot of people saying 'we wouldn't fly just now', because you can't socially distance on a plane."

Asked if Dr Hilary would consider flying, he said: "No. I wouldn't. Absolutely not."

Air bridges will allow Britons to go on holiday to certain destinations without needing to quarantine for 14 days on their return to the UK.

In place of the quarantine arrangements will be a traffic light system, with officials placing countries into green, amber and red categories based on the prevalence of coronavirus within each nation’s borders.

It is expected a quarantine-free list of countries will be published on Wednesday, with restrictions lifted as soon as July 6.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
