Dr Hilary Jones issues important advice to parents over reported Covid-19 syndrome in children

Dr Hilary Jones has issued important advice to parents after reports of a new coronavirus-related syndrome in children emerging in the UK.

ITV's resident health expert appeared on Good Morning Britain this morning and spoke to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about the worrying reports.

Professor Stephen Powis, NHS England's medical director, said during yesterday's government daily briefing that he has asked medical experts to look into reports of this syndrome as "matter of urgency”.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain viewers, Dr Hilary said: "It's really important because I know that parents will be anxious," the Mirror Online reports.

Confirming that there have been reports of a serious syndrome that involve a rash of various types, abdominal pain and dizziness, Dr Hilary said that it had been compared to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

However, Dr Hilary assured viewers that it affects a "very small" amount of children.

"We're talking about 20 or 30 children around the country," he said, but admitted that it is "currently baffling doctors at the moment".

Host Susanna Reid then asked Dr Hilary what parents should do if their children begin showing symptoms.

Dr Hilary reiterated that a lot of children with the symptoms would likely have something else other than a serious Covid-19 related syndrome.

"This is really important, Susanna, because a lot of children who have a [symptom like a] rash it will be something else," he said. "It's most unlikely the rash will have anything to do with Covid-19."

However, Dr Hilary added: "The bottom line is if your child has a temperature and gut symptoms, call 111."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
