Dr Hilary Jones explains the 'safest option' for going on holiday amid the pandemic

Dr Hilary Jones has explained the safest ways that Brits can still enjoy a holiday this year amid the pandemic.

Speaking to Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh on Good Morning Britain, the health expert said: "If you're on an aeroplane, you're breathing air that's been recirculated through filters.

"They don't absolutely filter out the virus if someone is carrying it and expelling it.

Dr Hilary has warned that people can not maintain social distancing on a plane (ITV)

"You're touching seats, you're dependent on someone having sterilised those seats absolutely thoroughly. People can wear masks but they'll be taking them off when they eat or drink on the aircraft.

"No-one has mentioned the toilets. This is not just a respiratory disease, it can be spread by the faecal–oral roots so toilets have to be spotlessly clean.

"You can't socially distance."

He added: "I think the whole holiday experience will be different, you'll still need to be socially distancing."

Ben Shephard then suggested driving to Europe or going across via the train or ferry and finding a property.

What are air bridges and which holiday destinations could be included?

Dr Hilary then agreed that it was a 'good option' for maintaining social distancing.

He said: "I think that's a good option. I think if you're in your own car, in a bubble with your own car, you don't necessarily have to get out of the car on the tunnel, and you could drive to a location that is remote and quiet.

"That would be one of the safest options.

"But also, a staycation in the UK is another very good option. Stay domestic, there are some beautiful locations."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
