Dr Hilary Jones delivers his verdict on UK schools reopening plan on June 1st

Dr Hilary Jones has weighed into the topical debate of UK schools reopening plan on June 1st.

The TV doctor said the risk was "small" in sending children back to school and teachers into the workplace on June 1st amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Tensions have been building over whether or not it was the right decision to reopen schools.

Dr Hilary had no qualms discussing the topic openly on This Morning on Friday.

However, the specialist admitted it would be "even safer" if schools waited an extra two weeks before opening their doors again.

This Morning's star cited it was "reassuring" to see Sweden didn't close schools but there was no transmission to teachers or children.

He said: "I think some of these scientist are looking at higher rates up north. We look at other countries and often compare what they’re doing.

"In Sweden they didn’t close schools at all but there was no transmission to teachers or children.
I know they are smaller but its shows that the rate is low and is reassuring.

"It is about balance of risk and some modellers are taking more risks than others.

"The risk is small but there are anxieties. If we wait an extra two more weeks it will be even safer."

Schools, colleges and nurseries closed more than eight weeks ago in the grip of the UK lockdown.

Their doors only remained open to teach the pupils whose parents were key workers.

Dr Hilary's comments come as Downing Street plans a big reveal of the scientific advice given by its Sage (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) to reopen schools.

Teaching unions were in uproar over the decision to reopen schools and have instructed their members not to go to work if they don't feel safe.
