Dr Hilary Jones addresses fears coronavirus vaccine will never be found

Scientists around the world are still searching for a vaccine against the coronvirus, with tests being carried out in different trials.

Currently, no vaccine has been confirmed amid fears full social distancing measures will not be lifted until there is one available.

With COVID-19 claiming the lives of over 33,000 people in the UK alone, it's thought the number could actually be as high as 50-60,000.

The government have lifted some measures this week, and changed the "stay at home" campaign to "stay alert".

Amid confusion over what it really means, people are returning to work and using public transport in masses.

But with it thought the world can't really go back to normal until a vaccine is found, Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan questioned whether there would ever be one.

He pointed out that several other pandemics and viruses that have affected the world do not have a vaccine.

Piers asked Dr Hilary Jones for his view on the matter, questioning if another approach would have to be taken instead.

The doctor revealed which flus and viruses do not currently have a vaccine in the UK, before revealing it could be possible the same happens with this strain of coronavirus.

With there being other strains of coronavirus, he confirmed there wasn't a vaccine for them while other treatments were being considered.

Piers said: "Did we ever get a vaccine for the Spanish flu? So here we are 100 years later, and we never got one.

"The World Health Organisation yesterday reminded people there is a chance we won't get one."

Dr Hilary replied: "Different virus of course. That was a different virus."

Piers then asked if a vaccine had been found for a coronavirus in the past, with Hilary saying: "No, I don't think we did for SARS.

"18 years looking for a vaccine for SARS which is a coronavirus."

Piers went on: "I think I'm right in saying there has never been a successful vaccine for a coronavirus. There's a bit of a reality check."

He then asked Hilary if it was more likely that a way to control COVID-19 was a treatment as oppose to a vaccine.

Hilary responded: "It's difficult to answer, I don't know. Therapeutics are being looked at, a number of trials are going on with a number of different drugs."

Drugs used for other conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, are being considered to see if they could limit the affects if COVID-19.

Susanna then commented: "The doubts are based largely on the fact that no vaccine has ever been approved for use in the US or the UK against other forms of coronavirus," as well as questions over immunity.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
