Dr Hilary issues chilling warning about second peak of coronavirus if lockdown is lifted too quickly

Doctor Hilary Jones has warned of the devastating impact of lockdown restrictions being lifted too quickly in the UK.

It's now been five weeks since the whole country was put on lockdown by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, with us all told to stay home wherever possible and only go outside for work, shopping for essential items, daily exercise and to care for vulnerable people.

With each new day comes more speculation as to when lockdown will end and what will happen when restrictions are lifted, with talk of Brits being given the opportunity to see 'a bubble' of friends and relatives and various rumours surrounding the re-opening of schools and the country's many pubs.

The UK death toll currently sits at 20,000, after the first cases of coronavirus were recorded back in February and, speaking on Monday's Good Morning Britain, Dr Hilary has said a second peak of the pandemic could claim a lot more, if lockdown ends too soon.

He told host Piers Morgan: "This virus behaves in ways we don't fully understand at all, there's a lot of ignorance about this virus.

"It affects all age groups for a long time when they get it severely and that's why we can't even think about end of lockdown yet. If we allow a second peak, it's going to cause a lot more deaths."

The show's resident health expert added: "We are perhaps talking about this prematurely, yes we need to end lockdown to a certain extent by phasing it, by doing it in stages of the right people at the right time.

"To let people think this is nearly over is completely wrong."
