Dr Hilary explains chances of anyone in UK getting Covid-19 right now as death toll drops to lowest since lockdown began

Dr Hilary Jones has revealed what the chances are of people in Britain now contracting Covid-19.

Appearing on today's installment of Good Morning Britain, the healthcare expert spoke to host Lorraine Kelly about the odds of catching the virus in the country right now.

It comes after the number of deaths fell below 100 for the first time since lockdown began back in March.

Data released on Sunday, June 7, revealed fatalities from coronavirus dropped to 77.

In response to the double figure number, Dr Hilary gave an update on how likely it is that someone will contract coronavirus at this moment in time.

"The perspective is that the chances of anyone in the UK picking up coronavirus right now is one in 1,000," he told viewers.

"What we know is that the age groups most affected are much older - 70s, 80s, 90s. They're the ones where we sees the consequences of coronavirus particularly.

"Of course there are rare cases in young people."

He then went on to discuss the likelihood of children contracting the virus now schools have re-opened.

He said: "It is not a childhood disease at all. The number of children affected is so few and far between globally, not just in this country."
