Dr Hilary debunks vaccine fears as he warns against 'misinformation' on social media

Good Morning Britain 's Dr Hilary Jones spoke out on Wednesday to debunk fear and misinformation being spread about the new coronavirus vaccine.

The new Pfizer vaccine has been 90% effective in a trial of 40,000 people, and is now awaiting approval before it can be rolled out.

Host Piers Morgan asked Dr Hilary: "Would you take the vaccine?"

Dr Hilary replied: "Absolutely, because I trust those people who have done all the trials in six different countries, on tens of thousands of people, to show me, along with the regulator, that it's not just effective - it is safe."

Dr Hilary warned most people spreading information on social media were unqualified (ITV)

Asked about anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, Dr Hilary said: "A lot of people are saying they won't [take it] at the moment, they will wait for other people and see what happens first."

He continued: "You have got so much misinformation, so many conspiracy theories and so many rogue states trying to dissuade us from having the vaccine because it's no in their interests, that's one factor.

"The other fact is most people putting out posts on social media are unqualified and they don't know what they're talking about.

Dr Hilary and Piers Morgan both agreed they would have the vaccine once it was approved (ITV)

"A lot of people have superstition scares about vaccines, putting something actively in your body that is there for a purpose that scientists understand but individuals don't.

"We also had that ridiculous situation with Andrew Wakefield and MMR years ago, an article that was totally refuted and dissed.

"But it undermined the herd immunity idea that we would get with all children being given MMR.

"That has recovered largely and we have a large number of people thankfully vaccinating their children against MMR."

His advice for anyone worried about the vaccine was: "If you don't know, if you're not sure, find out from reputable sources what the vaccine can do.

"I believe it will be effective and safe, it won't get approval if it isn't safe and the more people who have the vaccination a dare seeing not to be getting coronavirus and going into hospital, the more people will be happy to get it."
