Dr Hilary claims coronavirus face masks are 'useless' to public - and could be dangerous

Dr Hilary Jones has controversially claimed face masks are 'useless' to the public.

The government previously insisted there was no scientific benefit to mask wearing but Sir Patrick Vallance yesterday said the stance is under review and may be changed.

On today's Good Morning Britain, Dr Hilary hit back by claiming face masks can actually do harm and transmit coronavirus.

When Susanna Reid asked why Britain was holding back, the GMB doctor admitted the science is "controversial".

He admitted they can be "detrimental" and only serve psychological benefits to the public as the virus can "drive a bus" through a mask.

He explained: "The science is controversial without doubt. If you look at the science it actually shows very clearly health care workers dealing with infected patients need to wear them for their own protection.

"And people with symptoms need to wear to stop transmission from coughing and sneeze. The science is clear there.

But Dr Hilary pointed out that or healthy people doing essential journeys and social distancing by two metres the use of masks "not proven to effective".

Piers Morgan questioned Hilary's advice (ITV)

He continued: "Most masks have gaps in them through which the virus can drive a bus through. The virus size is 1/10,000th of a millimetre.

"When you’re inhaling air through a mask the virus will penetrate and be sucked in. It can do harm wearing a mask. You put hands to your face to adjust, it gets itchy and moist.

"They can transmit the virus when the mask gets damp and most it trap the virus. You have to handle effectively to make it safe."

Piers claimed the key issue was to stop infected people spreading the virus to others and was the reason they were always worn across Asia.

Dr Hilary replied: "That’s the theory. We don’t know how far tidal air, the air you breathe when you cough and sneeze can transmit.

"Social distancing at two metres is much more important. It can make you feel complacent, which can be detrimental."

Piers explained that his wife Celia Walden has been wearing a mask in public and people have been veering away from her.

Dr Hilary added: "Psychologically it make you feel better and make someone else put in place the social distancing we’re asking to do.

"What’s more important is keeping a physical distance at all times and washing hands frequently.

"There’s no scientific evidence it’s beneficial. That’s what Public Health England are saying. For other countries, WHO are saying it might be worth it.

"For the US, anything they can be seen to be doing is worthwhile."
