Recent headlines surrounding the NWA biopic may have been focussed Suge Knight and the subsequent events following his alleged hit-and-run incident, but at last night’s Grammys, a trailer for Straight Outta Compton received its first official premiere.
Ahead of the trailer itself - more of which you can read about here - there was a short introduction from Dr Dre and Ice Cube, as well as a cameo from Kendrick Lamar. The NWA members and Lamar each reminisce about their time in Compton and the seminal rap group’s impact. “When I think of NWA it wasn’t music to me - it was like a real lifestyle,” says Lamar.
Comparing NWA’s music to a “weapon” and a “non-violent protest”, Dr Dre also alludes to the recent police shootings in the US, and says it is a “good time to tell our story.”
Directed by F. Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton is out on 14 August, and features a host of relatively unknown actors: Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr will play the part of Ice Cube, Jason Mitchell has been cast in the role of Eazy-E, and Corey Hawkins will step into the role as Dr Dre.
