Dr Alex George shares frustration over acne after wearing mask on NHS frontline

Love Island's Dr Alex George opened up about his acne being irritated by his facemask.

The key worker has been battling the coronavirus on the NHS frontline.

Wearing a mask has caused his acne to get worse in the weeks he has been wearing PPE in the workplace.

Taking to his Instagram on Sunday, Alex detailed the struggles he has been facing with his "maskne" - a term to describe facemask acne.

In a candid post, the former Love Island star talked about how much the skin condition has "affected his confidence" over the years.

The reality star revealed he was "nervous" but he gave his fans an insight into his struggles.

He wrote: "Masks and face coverings have definitely worsened my acne, which in the bigger picture might not seem like a big deal, but has been frustrating.

"I have taken steps to tackle the problem and my skin is much better for it.

"With face coverings becoming commonplace I wanted to share some advice and tips with you to help prevent and treat any ‘maskne’ flare ups."

️The doctor linked the post to a new YouTube video where he gave top tips on how to prevent "maskne" to his followers.

Accompanied with his note, he shared a close-up of his acne spots across his lower chin and neck.

Alex said: "These are mostly due to the facemasks. I do battle a little bit with acne but I've really noticed since the facemasks have been used."

The useful video saw Dr Alex list his advice, including wearing face coverings instead of masks where possible, and when to wear a mask.

"When you wear a mask, and you cover up your skin, you're adding a layer to your skin - effectively blocking those pores," the doctor explained.

"When they become blocked, they become inflamed and you can get spots."

Alex encouraged his followers to only wear a facemask when "really needed" within the one metre distance guidelines.

"Only wear the facemask when you need to, obviously following the guidance, think about what type of mask you're wearing, and the fit of that mask," he shared.

He advised people to research properly when looking for face coverings.

He urged fans to moisturise and cleanse the skin (Instagram)

The doctor said looking after and preparing skin is an important step before wearing a mask.

He added: "Before you wear the facemask, it's important to clean your skin, to unblock your pores to reduce the chance of them becoming blocked when you wear the facemask."

Alex also warned fans to use only fragrance free skin care products as they are "kinder to skin" and avoid making things worse.

"Really important to moisturise," he added.

"Use a sensitive moisturiser in my opinion, I usually go for water-based ones or ones that don't really cause any irritation on my skin.

"Make sure your skin is nicely hydrated."
