Dr Alex George opens up on 'tough' NHS shift as he deals with coronavirus deaths

Dr Alex George opened up about his busy NHS shift when he dealt with coronavirus deaths.

The former Love Island star shared what it was like working on the frontline at the hospital where he works in Lewisham.

Alex admitted it had been "tough" on Monday after patients in the department died of coronavirus infections.

The A&E hero said there has been a spike in COVID-19 cases and he said he expected the peak was still to come in upcoming weeks.

He told Sky News : "Yesterday's shift was a particularly busy one. We had quite a few patients who were really quite unwell from coronavirus. Unfortunately, a few deaths as well which is always tough.

"We're seeing the department is getting more and more cases of coronavirus and we're expecting that to continue over the next few weeks. I think the peak is still to come."

Alex expressed he found it very challenging seeing young people who don't have underlying health conditions and were very unwell with coronavirus in hospital.

The doctor explained it's been "very upsetting" for the medics as well as the young patients who have been suffering at this time.

He elaborated: "We saw a huge number of cases, particularly very unwell cases. What shocks us sometimes is that of course we're seeing a very skewed part of the population. We're seeing a small percentage very unwell, 90 per cent are recovering in their own homes.

"But we are seeing young people who are very unwell with it and that can be very challenging. We're only human.

"There are young patients, who don't have underlying conditions. It's very upsetting for the patient and for us as well.

"Of course I would say that is a rarity, most people who are fit and well will recover from mild to moderate symptoms, but there is no guarantee of that."

Dr Alex rose to fame when he was looking for love on Love Island in 2018.

He eventually struck up a connection with Alexandra Cane but he called it off just a day before the finale episode.

The doctor has found love since leaving the villa.

Dr Alex also returned to his place of work at a hospital in Lewisham.

The A&E hero has been working tirelessly in the battle against coronavirus alongside other frontline workers.
