Dozy driver reclined car seats and went for three hour sleep after parking on bend of dual carriageway

An idiot driver who parked on a bend of a dual carriageway and went to sleep for three hours has been fined £1400.

Darren Kelly’s black car had no lights on and was straddling the road after he ran out of petrol on his way to a weekend break with his partner.

He then spent more than 90 minutes locked in the car and arguing with police officers because he wanted to go back to sleep.

Kelly, 27, of Kennoway, Fife, admitted culpably and recklessly endangering others on the A90, near Inchture, Perthshire, last June.

Prosecutor Robbie Brown told Perth Sheriff Court: “Other drivers had limited time to react.

"They didn’t see it until they were dangerously close.

"The accused and another person were sleeping in the vehicle. The seats were fully reclined. Sleeping bags were being used.

“When police tried to speak to them, they were less than co-operative.”

The court heard dad-of-three Kelly could lose his job as a labourer if he was banned for driving.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis imposed the hefty fine.
