Dozens remain in hospital after fatal Bedford train collision

  • One person died and eight individuals remain in critical condition following a devastating train collision near Bedford last Friday, where an East Midlands Railway (EMR) service struck the rear of another train.
  • The deceased has been identified as Shaun Burton, 60, the driver of one of the trains, and over 100 people received hospital treatment, with 53 still admitted as of Monday.
  • British Transport Police (BTP) and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) have launched a priority investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident, which occurred at 5.15pm when the 4.40pm train from Corby collided with the stationary 3.50pm service from Nottingham.
  • Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander addressed the House of Commons, confirming the independent RAIB investigation and appealing for patience while urging against speculation, assuring that lessons will be learned.
  • The railway line between Bedford and Luton is expected to remain closed for the rest of the week for recovery operations, with EMR establishing a customer care team and dedicated helpline for affected passengers.
