Dozens of swimmers brave freezing water for Christmas Day swim at Edinburgh beach

Dozens of swimmers braved the cold for a swim at Portobello Beach on Christmas Day.

The festive tradition takes place every year in Portobello, Edinburgh, on Christmas morning with this year being a socially distant affair.

Hardy swimmers, some wearing antlers and Santa hats, dashed into the sea to splash around despite air temperatures being 2C.

Even a dog joined in with the fun after chasing its owner into the water.

It comes as Scots this year celebrate Christmas under tight coronavirus restrictions. Families are allowed to gather indoors, if safe, for one day only before all of mainland Scotland goes into tier four from Boxing Day.

People are once again being asked to ‘stay at home’, while non-essential shops, pubs and restaurants will all remain closed for at least three weeks.

The school Christmas holidays have been extended until January 11, and pupils will learn from home for at least the first week back.

In their festive messages, Scotland’s political leaders recognised 2020 as “a Christmas like no other” and paid tribute to frontline workers.
