Dozens of stolen guns recovered as pair charged with firearms offences

The police investigation was a "hard slog", the Assistant Commissioner says.

Detectives have recovered all 37 handguns stolen in a brazen theft at a Melbourne firearms store, and charged what police allege are two members of a crime syndicate behind the heist.

Chadstone man Adem Hammit, 18, has been charged with stealing around $40,000 worth of guns, as well as retaining stolen goods and other firearms offences.

Ahmed Al Hamza, 20, from Docklands has been charged with firearms offences and harbouring stolen goods.

Mr Hammit is accused of casing O'Reilly's Firearms in Thornbury, before breaking in and fleeing with the weapons shortly after 11:00pm on January 29.

Police allege Mr Hammit, along with two others, threatened staff before stealing the guns — one of which they dropped while they were fleeing.

Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said the investigation had been a "hard slog".

"[The guns] were going to be sold for other criminals involved in organised crime or other criminal activity," he said.

"From our perspective it was a great result to get every one of those guns back."

The pair charged over the robbery were arrested by special operations police on Collins Street, Docklands, on Monday.

"They are a group that … are known to us and, as I said, probably involved in a whole range of different activities, but they've been charged with these particular offences," Assistant Commissioner Fontana said.

An extensive search of a nearby apartment uncovered the guns, police said.

Police also executed search warrants at Craigieburn, Dallas, Wallan, Keilor Downs, Chadstone and Broadmeadows, and arrested four others.

They are being interviewed by police.
