Dozens of sheds and greenhouses appear at Salford Quays for socially distanced dining this summer

A cluster of greenhouses will spring up at Salford Quays this summer as part of a new socially distanced dining and arts experience.

Box on the Docks is taking shape at MediaCityUK, where 30 self-contained sheds and glass huts will be placed outside restaurants and cafes.

The project aims to provide them with extra space to trade safely and sustainably, since many venues have had to cut their capacities to allow more room between tables.

Craft beer specialist The Dockyard, cocktail bar The Alchemist, plant-based restaurant Vertigo and coffee shop award-winning coffee specialists Grindsmith are among those confirmed to be taking part so far.

Launched in partnership with HemingwayDesign, the boxes will be designed by local artists and will feature everything from neon light installations and murals, to sound projections and poetry.

There'll also be plenty of outdoor seating with views of the waterfront.

Stephen Wild, managing director at MediaCityUK, said: “We pride ourselves on the quality of our public spaces at MediaCityUK, providing a safe and welcoming environment for all.

"We know the hospitality and creative industries have been among the hardest hit by the impact of Covid-19, and Box on the Docks is our way of helping them back on their feet."

Artists commissioned for the project include Islington Mill-based collective Manchester Street Poem, whose theme will focus on the power of words; multidisciplinary artist Tasha Whittle, who will create a pod inspired by nature; and Salford-based arts group Walk the Plank, who will be crafting nautical themed boxes based on the history of the docks.

Imogen Taylor-Tate and Kirsty Taylor BA Interior Design graduates from Salford University, have also designed the Colour Me Crazy pod pictured above.

They said: “Driving imagination and playfulness and filled with colour, this box will be a reminder to keep our childlike sense of humour and innocence – even in these trying times."

Josie Cahill, place director at MediaCityUK said: “As people start to safely spend more time outside, Box on the Docks will hopefully offer a new cultural destination with the boxes becoming an al fresco gallery to explore the work of Salford-based artists whilst enjoying the green space and canal views at MediaCityUK.

"We’re looking forward to seeing the commissions installed and welcoming visitors safely back to MediaCityUK.”

Box on the Docks will be open from the end of July. For more information and to book, visit boxonthedocks.co.uk.
