Clothing retailer River Island will cut a further 110 roles and close 33 stores under its restructuring plan.
That’s on top of more than 100 redundancies made in January this year, bringing the total to over 200 jobs lost.
It’s unclear which departments are affected so far in the current round of layoffs, but the earlier round was felt across the buying, merchandising and HR departments.
As well as job cuts, River Island secured High Court approval to close 33 UK stores and make rent cuts for another 71 in the restructuring plan.
This comes after the company has been experiencing prolonged financial difficulty, which the retailer says stemmed from the impact of online shopping and low footfall on UK high streets, as reported by My London.
38 stores will see rent discounts of between 25 per cent and 75 per cent for 36 months, and switching to zero rent on another 24. Just nine stores will require full rent.
Some of the stores facing rent cuts are based in and around London, including Bexleyheath, Bracknell, Park House (Oxford Street), Thurrock, and Watford.
London-based stores Bromley, Walthamstow, and Wandsworth will see their rents cut to zero.
