Dozens of residents in Irish town awoken by low-flying helicopter overhead

Dozens of residents in Carlow were woken up by a low-flying helicopter zipping above their homes on Wednesday night.

The noise of propellers could be heard throughout the town shortly after midnight with locals getting a shock with the racket.

Loads took to social media to ask what exactly was happening as they slumber was interrupted by the manic scenes.

Ciara Murphy said: "Contemplating getting out of bed and going to help this Carlow helicopter find what it's looking for because I ain't going to get any sleep til' its done."

Ger Kirwan added: " Pretty sure there is a helicopter flying over Carlow but at the rate 2020 is going I wouldn't be surprised if its a massive wasp or something like that."

While Matty Kelly added: "Great on top of Coronavirus all I’m going to listen to for the next few days is the helicopter over Carlow."

However, people soon learned it was a garda helicopter involved in a chase for suspect who had just carried out a burglary.

Garda Air support, the drugs and road policing unit as well as community gardai were all involved in the late night search.

What to do in an emergency situation

Eventually a man in his 20s was found in a field and arrested in connection with a burglary in Carlow Town.

The suspect is due to appear in Carlow Distrcit Court this morning.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Carlow are investigating a burglary which occurred in the Carlow town area yesterday evening, 18th March 2020 at approximately 11.50pm.

"A large amount of criminal damage was caused to a business premises in the area.

"Uniformed Gardaí from Carlow town with support from the Roads Policing Unit, Community Policing, the District Drugs Unit and Air Support Unit carried out a search of the area.

"A male, aged in his 20s, was located in a nearby field and arrested on suspicion of burglary."
