Dozens of police isolating after Surfers Paradise, Beenleigh officers test positive to COVID-19

Dozens of police from Surfers Paradise are isolating and awaiting COVID-19 test results after two fellow officers tested positive.

Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said it was similar to the situation in Beenleigh, but it is not known whether the cases are linked.

"The Beenleigh gentleman, he's part of the cluster from the gym down at Burleigh," Superintendent Sheldon said.

"Now we've got one of our officers at Surfers Paradise who has also tested positive."

It is believed the Gold Coast officers tested positive after a social event involving off-duty officers on December 14.

"Luckily we've had almost two years to train for this," Superintendent Sheldon said.

"We expected this to happen during the Delta and we dodged a bullet, we got away with that, but on this occasion one of our officers tested positive."

He said there were still adequate resources to continue policing operations for the area.

"We're still in the business of looking after the public," he said.

"We've got police officers from around the district, we can call on Logan and anywhere else, so we're adequately resourced.

"The station in Beenleigh is being deep cleaned as we speak and the Surfers Paradise one, we're taking advice from Queensland Health as to what's needed."

Superintendent Sheldon said businesses needed to plan for the same scenario.

"If you're not there tomorrow, who's going to do your job?" he said.

Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said he was "assured" that police would be able to cope and that the planning was "pretty solid".

"We had up to 1,300 officers tied up in COVID at the peak during the pandemic and currently we're under 500 per day … so we have the flexibility there."

He said the Queensland Police Service would continue to monitor the situation.

"If we see any pressures on the Gold Coast for instance, we'll bring [police] from other areas, we have the flexibility to do that."
