Dozens of off duty 'COP26 police' snapped 'paddling' on East Lothian coast

Dozens of off duty COP26 police have been snapped paddling and speaking to locals on the East Lothian Coast.

This afternoon locals were bemused to spot a number of vans from forces across the country and dozens of police officers paddling in North Berwick, posing for photos and speaking to locals.

Allegedly too many cops have been drafted in for the United Nations Climate Conference in Glasgow so many have had time off duty to enjoy the Scottish sunshine.

Carolyn McCubbing said: “I was told that a lot of the police drafted in for security at COP26 are not needed as it has been very peaceful.

“Why the off duty officers were in North Berwick I’m not sure but they turned up in three vans that can be seen in the photos.

“They had a good look around the harbour and old pool area before all trooping out onto the paddling pool wall and posing for a photo.

“We were having a late lunch at the seabird centre when my nieces spotted the vans pulling up.

“I didn’t get close enough to see where they were from but I think I heard they were staying at a Premier Inn somewhere.”

Carolyn shared the pictures to Facebook captioned: “A squad of COP26 cops stopped by North Berwick for a gander and a photo opportunity this afternoon.

“This was them all filing back off the paddling pool wall after the photo was taken.”

The light hearted post gained over 100 likes of the cops having a paddle to the amusement of many locals.

One joked: “Were down the harbour yesterday… near s*** myself.”

Another added: “Did they misunderstand the COP26 objective of 'arresting' the rise in sea levels?”

One exclaimed: “More money than sense, who is paying the bill.”

While one said: “We saw several Devon and Cornwall police vans passing by Aberlady. Had the area been alerted we could have laid on some cream teas!”

A number of police services from across the country have been drafted in to support officers at COP26 in Glasgow last week and this week.

Police Scotland have been contacted for more information regarding the pictures.
