Dozens of new jobs are set to be created for young people in Sefton as part of a new initiative.
Under a new government scheme called Kickstart, up to 60 young people will be able to commence a new work opportunity in the coming months.
The scheme will provide wage subsidies to employers that create new work experience placements – and forms a key part of the Plan for Jobs announced in summer 2020 as a response to job losses resulting from the impact of COVID-19.
Through its Sefton @ Work employment and education programme, Sefton Council is applying to become an ‘intermediary’ for the scheme.
This means the local authority will be able to support local businesses, while helping unemployed young people into work.
If approved, the Sefton @ Work team would receive up to £492,000 for the “proposed introductory phase” of up to 60 starters.
Documents on the council’s website say that youth unemployment has climbed to “unprecedented levels” during the pandemic.

The report goes on to say “the council and local employers can act on this important issue through this scheme.”
Sefton Council says there is huge demand from local companies seeking to enter the scheme – but a lot of them are not not large enough to apply themselves directly.
The council will act as an “intermediary” so that the jobs can be created.
Involvement in this scheme, Sefton Council says, will provide “assurance that the jobs created for Sefton residents are of good quality and offer possibilities to improve longer term sustainable progression”.
