Dozens of live pangolins have been discovered stuffed into a box on a bus in Vietnam.

30 of the endangered mammals were found "dehydrated and weak" onboard the bus, which had come from Laos.

The animals are a highly-prized delicacy in Vietnam, and they are the most trafficked animal in the world.

Their meat is considered "high-end" and their scales are used in traditional medicines.

NGO Save Vietnam's Wildlife said four of the pangolins had died and many others were in bad shape.

Truong Van Truong said: "Most were dehydrated and weak because they were kept in a tight space for a long time."

Police said the driver and his wife have been arrested after they were suspected to have been paid to transport the animals from neighbouring Laos.
