New words added to Oxford English Dictionary - from 'PC bang' to 'K-drama'

The Oxford English Dictionary have added 26 Korean words in a "recognition of the shift in language".

Hit TV show Squid Game, Oscar-winning film Parasite and pop giants BTS has seen the influence grow in the UK, the OED recognise.

Korean food features heavily in the latest update with banchan - a small vegetable dish, and rice plate kimbap both added.

Hallyu, a word which represents the global success of South Korean music, film, TV, fashion and food, has also been included, as has K-drama .

The Oxford English Dictionary say adding so many Korean words was a nod to the shift in language used by English speakers.

It said: “The increase in international interest in South Korea and its popular culture, esp. as represented by the global success of South Korean music, film, television, fashion, and food.

“Also: South Korean popular culture and entertainment itself. Frequently as a modifier, as in hallyu craze, hallyu fan, hallyu star.”

They added: "They show how Asians in different parts of the continent invent and exchange words within their own local contexts, then introduce these words to the rest of the English-speaking world, thus allowing the Korean wave to continue to ripple on the sea of English words.

“The adoption and development of these Korean words in English also demonstrate how lexical innovation is no longer confined to the traditional centres of English in the United Kingdom and the United States."

The success of Korean exports such as shows Squid Game or Parasite can be put down to greater global thought by cultural producers, according to

Dr Hye-Kyung Lee from King's College London says the success of the popular programmes has played a part.

Dr Lee, who researches culture and arts, said: "It's been more than 10 years since the early success of K-pop, so Korean cultural producers have a global mindset.

"The characters do not have a lot of hope, they don't have a future and just struggle to survive.

"These dramas or films are entertaining, and they have something unique which can strike a chord with people around the world.

"They present a critique of society and social economic conditions, which people can relate to through the characters.

"In terms of technology and talent, they are cutting edge and have a strong capacity to produce high quality products."

Squid Game is currently on track to be Netflix's most-watched series ever.
