Dozens of kids asked to stay home after multiple Covid-19 cases confirmed at Irish school

Dozens of children have been asked to stay home after multiple Covid-19 cases were confirmed at an Irish school.

An urgent letter was sent to parents and guardians of kids at the Limerick secondary school explaining that a number of classes will be held online.

Officials revealed that three people in the school community had tested positive for coronavirus.

And as a result both fifth and sixth year students have been asked to stay home.

The letter read: "Dear parents/guardians/students I have been informed this evening of three positive cases of Covid-19 in the school community.

"After consultation with the HSE school support team we are asking that fifth year and sixth year students work from home tomorrow, teachers will deliver your classes online.

"We are at this time working with the HSE in establishing close contacts and contact will be made with anyone deemed to be a close contact from tomorrow."

It comes after two classes were sent home after several Covid-19 cases were confirmed at a primary school in Co Kildare.

An urgent letter was sent to parents and guardians explaining that two classes will be working remotely from home for at least two days.

Officials said that "a number" of cases of Covid-19 had been confirmed at the school.

However they advised at the rest of the school will remain open as normal.

The letter reads: "A public health risk assessment has been undertaken and the staff and parents of any children deemed to be close contacts of the confirmed cases have been contacted and advised accordingly.

"If your child is not identified as a close contact your child does not need a test for Covid-19, they can continue to attend school, and no further actions are required at this time.

"If your child develops any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 infection (such as a cough, a fever, loss or change in sense of taste or smell), please do not send your child to school, contact your GP and begin restricting your child's movements, as per public health advice."

They added: "I recognise that these are worrying times for everyone, but we are working closely with the HSE and following their guidelines.

"Unfortunately, due to a staffing shortage we have had to request that two classes work remotely from home for the next two days under the guidance of their teachers."
