Dozens of iPads donated to Edinburgh hospital so coronavirus patients can 'stay in touch'

A top investment management firm has donated dozens of iPads to an Edinburgh hospital for coronavirus patients.

In a gesture of goodwill, Baillie Gifford sent off over 20 Apple iPads, each costing hundreds of pounds, to the Western General Hospital.

Patients who test positive for coronavirus after being hospitalised are isolated with most hospitals operating a no-visit policy to prevent the spread of infection.

But, using tablet computers and smart phones, patients can stay in touch with their loved ones.

WGH Connect, a page sharing news from the Western General Hospital, posted photos of the new iPads to social media thanking the firm.

"A massive thanks go out to Baillie Gifford for their incredible donation of iPads for some of our wards.

Stuart Dunbar, partner at Baillie Gifford, said: “Like many other locally headquartered businesses, we’re doing what we can to support the NHS and other local charities as their services come under strain, either with donations or practical help.

"Whether big or small this is a really important time for everyone to offer what they can. We’re still looking at other ways in which we can make a difference and hope to be able to help those on the frontline some more in coming days and weeks."

"This will really help patients stay in touch with their friends and families at a difficult time. Thank you", they said.

Elsewhere, an NHS nurse has raised thousands to buy "essential items" for coronavirus patients in the Lothians area.

Alison Williams , who works on the frontline at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, said she had seen first-hand "how little" some patients had.
