Dozens of 'ignorant' parkers hit with fines after heading to Formby beach

Dozens of 'ignorant' day-trippers were handed parking fines in Formby yesterday.

With the sun shining, huge numbers of people headed to enjoy the Bank Holiday in the coastal town, but not for the first time residents were left furious by inconsiderate parking.

Merseyside Police were made aware of the situation and issued 70 separate traffic offence reports for parking offences around the Formby area yesterday (Saturday).

The force's Roads Policing Unit shared a picture of a number of vehicles parked almost fully on the pavement area of a street - blocking any path for pedestrians, parents with prams or disabled people using wheelchairs.

The force tweeted: "Following complaints from residents we issued 70 traffic offence reports for parking offences around Formby yesterday. If you intend to visit a beauty spot, please park responsibly and with courtesy."

Parking issues are not new to the Formby area and seem to reoccur whenever the weather turns nice.

In March, local politicians called for change after local residents reported being 'trapped in their own homes' during another sunny weekend.

Lines of double-parked cars meant many of the village’s roads were effectively one-way only, with many frustrated home-owners unable to go out.

At the time, Sefton Councillor Carla Thomas said: “Please consider the needs of others and apply common sense.

“Please leave enough space for wheelchairs/ prams to pass.”

The latest action by police to clamp down on those parking selfishly in the area has been welcomed.

Karin Snape responded to the update by stating: "Hooray, it stops you moving on pavements if in wheelchair, pushchairs, with a guide dog, so ignorant as well as illegal."

Already today police have been turning people away from trying to get to Formby beach, with force cars blocking the route in and signs stating that the car parks serving the resort are full.
