Dozens of Glaswegians checked into A&E with sunburn last month - and five were children

A total of 25 people checked into Glasgow's emergency departments with sunburn last month - with five of those treated being children.

The figures have been revealed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde following the recent heatwave across the area, which led to the shock rise in cases.

From the 25 who attended A&E with burns, five of those were at the Royal Hospital for Children, which has led to experts issuing some reminders to Glaswegians on how to stay safe in the warm weather.

A spokesperson said: "There were 25 presentations with sunburn to Emergency Departments last month with five of these being at the Royal hospital for Children.

"We want everyone to enjoy good weather, however people need to be sensible and take precautions, which will ensure they stay healthy while enjoying the weather.

"People should try to avoid being in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day between 12 noon and 3pm. Use a water resistant sun screen with an SPF of at least 30, applied regularly.

"Replenishing fluids is really important as everyone runs the risk of becoming relatively dehydrated in hot weather and everyone should be particularly careful to take extra liquids, cold tap water is ideal, at regular intervals.

"Children are especially vulnerable and care should be taken to ensure they are covered up adequately. Babies, in particular, need to be covered up. With both sun-creams and sun protection clothing designed for babies and children there is no need for children to be over-exposed to the sun."

The advice comes as temperatures hot up again in Glasgow and the west, with lots of sunny spells and highs of 19C predicted by the Met Office across the weekend.
