Dozens of firefighters tackle huge blaze at industrial estate

Dozens of firefighters are tackling a major blaze on an industrial estate in Bolton.

The fire broke out at the Firwood Industrial Estate in the Bradshaw area.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Unit said 10 fire engines were at the scene off Thicketford Road.

That's in the region of 50 firefighters fighting the flames.

Crews were called at just before 8pm.

Police shut the road to oncoming traffic just before 9pm.

One resident, speaking to the M.E.N., said he heard a "big bang" just before 8pm.

Alison Eggleston, who's house backs onto the lane leading to the industrial estate said she saw the fire about 8pm.

She said: "I looked out the window and what I could see in the roof of the building was like a volcano. I could just see the flames shooting out of the roof and going everywhere."

The fire service said the blaze involved a 'commercial unit' in the industrial estate and was ongoing.

The unit hasn't been identified.

One witness at the scene said a number of industrial units 'look completely burnt down'.

The spokesman said firefighters were tackling the blaze with water jets.

Residents in the surrounding area are being urged to keep windows and doors closed because of the amount of smoke being released.

No further details have been revealed.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Police are stopping anyone from going down the road to the units.

The exact location is said to be just past the Thicketford Road Bridge on Winchester Way.

Greater Manchester Police said: "We have reports of a large fire at Firwood Industrial Estate, Thicketford Road, Bolton.

"Fire and Rescue are at the scene."

In a later update, police said: "There are a number of emergency service vehicles at the junction of Thicketford Road/Alders Lane in response to the fire at Firwood Industrial Estate. Please avoid the area."
