Dozens of drivers caught by police using hard shoulder to skip M62 crash - they can expect a letter in the post

Scores of motorists were caught driving on the hardshoulder to skip traffic caused by a fatal crash on the M62.

The drivers also used closed lanes to get past the crash scene on Wednesday, North West Motorway Police tweeted.

The carriageway was closed near junction 12 at around 1.30pm following reports of a smash between a white Transit van, a Red Yamaha R1 motorbike and Heavy Maintenance Plant Machinery.

The motorcyclist – a man believed to be in his 20s – died at the scene.

Police caught 82 drivers speeding past the crash scene.

Officers tweeted about the incident, warning that the motorists put Highways England officers in danger.

The motorists identified will receive a 'notice of intended prosecution in the post'.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: "On Wed, May 27 on the M62 during a fatal RTC investigation, 82 drivers breached either a red X or used the hardshoulder, putting Highways England officers in danger.

"All the vehicle details are known, a notice of intended prosecution is in the post."
